Why we exist
We are a sex worker justice collective. We exist for the right of all people to choose to do sex work on their own terms. We exist as a fiercly supportive community among all sex workers.
History
We are a group of sex workers who created ANSWER Detroit in the summer of 2019 because we were really fucking ready to decriminalize sex work. We founded ANSWER with the belief that decriminalization is only one piece of the juicy liberation we deserve; as sex workers and as humans just trying to survive capitalism.
Therefore, we created five focus areas for our work. In creating these focus areas, we set the intention for organic community growth that aligns with our collective vision:

- CULTURE & CREATING ARTS
- HEALTH, HOUSING, LEGAL SUPPORT
- HEALING & WELLNESS
Oh, here’s another important thing you should know: In the fall of 2019, our founding members unanimously voted to NOT become a 501(c)3 or 501(c)4 organization. At that time, we believed that scrambling to identify into an arbitrary (re: hierarchical) tax structure felt premature and insincere to our collective mission.
In early 2020, our existing membership unanimously voted to incorporate as a cooperative. We are currently in the process of building a cooperative model that fits ANSWER’s values.

In coalition with organizations across Detroit, we work to raise cash bail funds for black women & mothers.
Mutual aid fund
The Detroit Sex Worker Mutual Aid Fund is a financial resource-sharing space created by Michigan-based sex workers to provide necessary support for fellow sex workers and their families.
SW Support Group
A weekly support group meeting for sex workers across all facets of the industry & of all experiences.
